In a witty riposte to US President Donald Trump’s professed interest in buying Greenland, a Danish territory and the world’s largest island, Danish netizens have launched a satirical petition proposing the purchase of California for $1 trillion.
If Trump believes land can be bought and sold like real estate, why not turn the tables and buy a piece of America?
Trump’s obsession with Greenland isn’t new. During his first term, he explored ways for the US to acquire the territory. Since his return to power, Trump has reiterated a strong desire to bring it under US control. During a press conference in January, he even refused to rule out military or economic coercion to gain control of the island for what he claims to be his country’s economic interests.
Now, in response, some Danes have begun a reverse acquisition movement, putting forward the idea of buying America’s most prosperous state. “Why Trump might sell? Let’s be honest – Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan. He’s called it ‘the most ruined state in the Union’ and has feuded with its leaders for years. We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price,” the petition reads.
The petition aims to raise $1 trillion, which breaks down to roughly 200,000 kroner (about $27,800) per Danish citizen. So far, it has racked up more than 260,000 signatures, with the number climbing.
What’s more surprising is the reaction from Californians. Instead of outrage, many have taken to social media to entertain the idea, playfully weighing the benefits of joining Denmark. With its generous social welfare policies, universal healthcare and top-tier education system, some are wondering — would it really be such a bad deal?
